Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid going to the dentist. While some people may worry about experiencing discomfort, for others, their anxiety stems from a fear of having their mouth examined. With sedation dentistry, a dentist can help you feel calmer and more at ease during your appointment.

Sedation dentistry uses medications to help patients relax during their dental treatment. It is especially useful for patients who are feeling anxious about their dental treatment, those who have a strong gag reflex, and those who are too sensitive for routine treatment. It is also sometimes used very commonly during oral surgery procedures.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide also called laughing gas, has been the primary method of sedation dentistry for many years. Patients are given a mask to wear during treatment, allowing them to breathe in the nitrous oxide. Once they are relaxed, we begin dental treatment. In just a few minutes, patients feel calm and relaxed.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a medication that is taken as a pill or liquid. It is a moderate form of sedation dentistry and can help patients experience relaxation during their dental visits. Oral sedation dentistry is sometimes referred to as “conscious sedation.”

With this sedation option, patients can resume normal activities after their dental visit.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is the most effective form of sedative dentistry, as it puts the patient into a deep state of relaxation. Although IV sedation may cause temporary amnesia, patients remember their procedure afterward and are quite comfortable.

General Anesthesia

In rare cases, sedation dentistry may be administered under general anesthesia. If the patient suffers from severe anxiety or is receiving multiple treatments, general anesthesia may be recommended.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is injected directly into the mouth. It numbs the tissues around the point of injection. There are a variety of types of local anesthesia, each designed for a specific purpose or area of the mouth.
